PBS/DUBLIN CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALS FOR MSB ATHLETES

The past two weeks have been very fruitful for a number of MSB athletes who either  re-wrote their personal best times at meetings in Irishtown and at the Antrim Forum or won  medals at the Dublin Championships at Morton Stadium..

Saturday night last (June 21st) at Irishtown saw a number of 800m races promoted by the Irish Miler’s club.

In the B race, John Coghlan finished 3rd reducing his PB to 1:55.57.  Andrew Brennan was the club’s representative in the C race running a very creditable 1:56.73 taking 3rd.  We had a winner in the D race with Michael O’Sullivan reducing his PB to 1:56.38, while in the same race Liam Tremble also landed a PB of 1:58.20 in finishing 3rd.  Alan Gray ran the E race finishing 4th in 2:06.25.  Overall, a very successful night for the athletes involved.

On the previous Saturday, the club was represented at the Northern Ireland championships, held at the Antrim Forum, by sprinters Joe Barry and Ruth Carson.  While neither athlete managed a podium finish, they were both rewarded with PBs of 11.87 and 13.02 respectively.

The Dublin Championships were held in a windy Morton Stadium on June 25th.  It was gratifying to note that the club was represented in practically every track race on the night.

Pride of place went to John Coghlan who struck gold in the men’s 5000m despite having to battle strongly over the last 800m with Paul Fleming of Rathfarnham/WSAF.  With Paul never far from his shoulder over this 800m, John showed tremendous resolve and character in holding on for a very merited win.

In the women’s 3000m, MSB occupied 2 of the 3 podium places with Kate O’Neill taking silver and Muriel Cummins (back from a couple of years sojourn in Australia) taking bronze.

In the men’s 800m we were represented by Andrew Brennan and Michael O’Sullivan, fresh from their respective PBs on Saturday night.  Unfortunately Michael didn’t appear to have recovered sufficiently from his PB effort  and failed to make the final.  However, Andrew had no such problems and made the final with ease where he finished 4th,  a fine achievement for a young man just turned 17.  In the Master’s 800, Dave Carroll ran a gutsy race to also finish 4th.

Joe Barry represented the club in the 200m where he ran another fine race to finish 5th.
