MSB president Eamonn Coghlan receives Irish Athletics Hall of Fame award

Irish athletics legend Eamonn Coghlan was inducted into the Irish Athletics Hall of Fame at the recent AAI awards dinner, held in the Crown Plaza Hotel, Santry.

Coghlan started his illustrious athletics career as a schoolboy, when he was taken under the wing of the late great Gerry Farnan, coach of Metropolitan Harriers AC, which was later to become Metro St. Brigids AC.

He developed into a truly world class athlete, representing Ireland at 3 Olympic Games, and among the many highlights of his career were 3 British AAA titles, 11 Irish Championships and a silver medal in the 1,500m at the European Championships in 1978. In America he became known as ‘Chairman of the Boards’ winning numerous indoor races and scoring 7 Wannamaker Mile victories at the  Millrose Games.

In 1983 Eamonn Coghlan won the World Championship 5,000 metres in Helsinki.
He also broke the world indoor mile record in the same year.

Eamonn Coghlan is still very much involved with Metro St. Brigids AC, being the club’s president and taking time to coach to some of the club’s most promising young athletes.
